Eyewear and beyond

Glasses are a simple, cost-effective, means of correcting vision. Are there other options? Of course. Contacts and corrective surgeries may be options on the table for you. Many people choose glasses if they only need temporary or situation-specific correction, but others prefer the aesthetic addition of glasses.

While eyeglasses used to be made of glass, they’re commonly made of plastic nowadays (“eyeplastics,” anyone?). Some plastics have UV-blocking properties and are less prone to shatter or break than glass. The type of lens material is crucial for fitting the purpose of the vision correction to the wearer.

If you need glasses during activities in which there is a possibility for impact, polycarbonate or trivex lenses may be best. Trivex is a more recent development that is easier to see through but just as tough as polycarbonate.

Another newer plastic lens is “high-index” and is often provided in place of potentially distorting thick glass lenses for those who need more help–visually speaking.

Beyond the lens, there are different coatings to protect the wearer from glare or provide higher levels of protection from UV light.

Based on the findings of your first or follow-up eye exam, the experts at Eyemart Express can help you decide the best option for you.

Is your prescription up-to-date?

Updating your prescription may seem like an unnecessary “hoop” held by insurance companies; however, it’s based on the reality of time-related changes of our eyes. Making that yearly or bi-yearly appointment is worth it! It’s especially important for individuals with myopia (nearsightedness) between the ages of 40 and 60, for whom the American Ophthalmic Association recommends frequent check-ins.
